Housing led regeneration, Upper end of Torquay High Street
As an outcome of the Council’s Transformation Strategy for Torbay’s Town Centres there should be more people living and working in town centres, helping to make those town centres more vibrant.
For Torquay, the Strategy seeks more housing at the upper end of the High Street – principally between Market Street and the Town Hall.
The Council is exploring the potential of creating a refreshed urban community in this area: keeping the quality retail and commercial uses; introducing more community uses (such as a GP surgery, library service etc); more residential, in underused space over ground floor commercial, by conversion of buildings and by new development; improving public space; and by encouraging more leisure, food and beverage uses.
The Council has written to Kevin Foster MP to assess the potential for Government funding of this project.
