Torbay businesses to develop their export plans

Torbay businesses are devising export plans after indentifying the opportunities in selling overseas at the Ready for Export workshop.

The workshop, delivered by TDA and Business West’s Export for Growth Project, helps businesses understand the early stage considerations that need to be planned before entering the export market.

The range of industries in Torbay was evident at the workshop, with businesses in photonics, life sciences, marine and manufacturing all expressing interest in establishing international trade in countries in Europe, the Middle East, the US and Australasia.

Torbay’s Elected Mayor, Gordon Oliver, said: “It was great to see so many of Torbay’s ambitious, growing businesses at the event. By understanding the opportunities to sell overseas, these local businesses are now best placed to explore these markets and export their products. We continue to work with local businesses to provide export and growth support to help them realise their ambitions.”

By working with international trade advisors and TDA, the next steps are to develop an export plan and complete applications for the trade bursary to support their plan.

Jason Buck, Investment Development Manager at TDA, said: “Businesses in Torbay have some fantastic products that are ready to export. Many of them have an idea of who they would like to sell to but have yet to start their export plans. With the support of this programme and working with their local International Trade advisor, we will help them advance the opportunities they have identified in their target countries and take the firsts steps to exporting.”

A bursary of £500-£1,000 is available for eligible businesses who attended the workshop, to be used to visit prospective markets, attend overseas trade shows, digital marketing or for research into new export markets.

Tom Birbeck, ARC Marine, said: “We have some great products that we develop in Brixham Labs, including our artificial reefs. The opportunities overseas are huge and we have had a number of conversations with international clients. The workshop has helped us indentify the next steps that we need to take to be able to take these opportunities forward and make exporting a reality.”

TDA and Business West will be delivering another workshop in October.

The workshops are being delivered as part of the Export for Growth project. Export for Growth is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Department for International Trade (DIT).
